Course Description:

This course will explore the problem of youth crime and delinquency in modern society.  The course will also focus on solutions to the problem by addressing several alternatives to institutionalization.

Teaching Method:

The class will be a combination of lectures and informal discussions. For extra credit there will be two class periods devoted to a question and answer session. This will be explained in class.  Each student will be encouraged to relate their own experiences (either directly or indirectly) with the juvenile justice system while they were growing up.

Course Grading and Exams: 

Your grade in the course will be based upon your scores on four exams (each worth a possible 100 points). For each exam, the grade will be based upon the following formula: 90% or more = A, 80-89% = B, 70-79% = C, 60-69% = D, below 60% = F.  Final grades are based upon the following formula: 360-400 = A, 320-359 = B, 280-319 = C, 240-279 = D, below 240 = F. Grades of plus or minus will be given in borderline cases. There will be an opportunity to earn some extra credit points by participating in a question and answer session two or three times during the semester. Tentative dates provided below. Details will be provided in class.

Religious Holidays Policy -- Any student missing class quizzes, examinations, or any other class or lab work because of observance of religious holidays shall be given an opportunity during that semester to make up missed work. The make-up will apply to the religious holiday absence only. It shall be the responsibility of the student to notify the instructor no later than the last day at late registration of his or her intention to participate in religious holidays which do not fall on state holidays or periods of class recess. This policy shall not apply in the event that administering the test or examination at an alternate time would impose an undue hardship on the instructor or the university which could not be avoided. Tutoring  -- The Academic Success Center (ASC) provides tutoring and academic assistance for all UNLV students taking UNLV courses.  Students are encouraged to stop by the ASC to learn more about subjects offered, tutoring times and other academic resources.  The ASC is located across from the Student Services Complex, #22 on the current UNLV map. UNLV Writing Center – The following statement is recommended for inclusion in course syllabi: One-on-one or small group assistance with writing is available free of charge to UNLV students at the Writing Center, located in CDC-3-301. Although walk-in consultations are sometimes available, students with appointments will receive priority assistance. Appointments may be made in person or by calling 895-3908. The student’s Rebel ID Card, a copy of the assignment (if possible), and two copies of any writing to be reviewed are requested for the consultation. Rebelmail – By policy, faculty and staff should e-mail students’ Rebelmail accounts only. Rebelmail is UNLV’s Official e-mail system for students. It is one of the primary ways students receive official university communication such as information about deadlines, major campus events, and announcements.
