DEPARTMENT OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE
CRJ 491 - INTERNSHIP
I. PREREQUISITES
1. You must be a CRJ major with a minimum GPA of 2.5 and junior standing or higher (60 credits or more).
4. Cannot be currently employed in the criminal justice field.
II. HOW TO ENROLL (NECESSARY PAPER WORK)
1. It is important that you start the process as soon as possible PRIOR to the start of the semester for which you want to do the internship - March if applying for the fall semester and October if applying for the spring semester. This is because some agencies require a background check (which may take up to two-six months to complete).
2. Review the list of internships (on file with the CRJ department or look on this web site) and select an agency you are interested in and contact them for an interview. If you are interested in an agency that is not on the list, feel free to contact them and they will be added to the list.
3. Completely fill out the forms (also on this web site or come to our office); don't forget the proof of insurance. All the paperwork must be filled out before you meet with the internship director.
4. Make an appointment to meet with the Internship Director (895-0236).
5. The application, complete with all signatures, must be turned in by December 1 for the spring semester and May 1 for the fall.
6. Note: no internships over the summer months.
III. REQUIREMENTS FOR COMPLETION (PASS/FAIL ONLY)
1. Keep a journal highlighting your experiences with the agency (this is for your own benefit and it should be little more than notes jotted down periodically); you do not have to turn in your journal.
2. Write a final report of no more than 10 pages, typed, double-spaced (this should include a written narrative of your experiences (this is where your journal will be useful), a brief overview of the agency and a description of your various duties); this will be due on the last day of classes. The paper may be sent via an e-mail attachment to: shelden@unlv.nevada.edu.
3. Minimum of one face-to-face meeting and/or two e-mail contacts with Director of Internship during the semester (each student is encouraged to phone and/or visit as often as needed in case of questions, problems, etc.).
4. An evaluation by your supervisor is required at the end of the semester. A form will be provided if necessary.
IV. INTERNSHIP DUTIES
1. Three credits: 8-10 hours per week;
2. Six credits: 16-20 hours per week;
3. Perform duties as required by the agency;
4. Internship officially begins the first day of instruction and ends on the last day of instruction;
